Japan to Face Defending Champs DPR Korea in U20 Asian Cup Climax
PATHUM THANI, Thailand - The stage is set for a heavyweight collision in the final of the 2026 AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup.
In a dominant semi-final performance on Wednesday evening, Japan dismantled China PR with a clinical 2-0 victory at the True BG Stadium. The win not only keeps Japan’s dream of a seventh title alive but also sets up a mouth-watering rematch against the defending champions, DPR Korea, who secured their spot earlier in the day by brushing aside South Korea 3-0.
From the opening whistle, the Young Nadeshiko displayed the technical precision and tactical discipline that has become their hallmark. It took just five minutes for Japan to unlock the Chinese defense. Mao Itamura found space in the box and fired home a low strike, immediately putting China on the back foot.
While China attempted to claw their way back into the match, Japan’s control of the midfield remained absolute. In the 24th minute, Noa Fukushima produced a moment of magic, curling a spectacular free-kick past the Chinese goalkeeper to double the lead.
Despite a more aggressive second half from China PR, Japan’s backline held firm, securing a clean sheet and their ticket to the championship match.
While the trophy remains the immediate goal, the "Big Four" of Asian youth football have already achieved their primary objective. By reaching the semi-finals, Japan, DPR Korea, China PR, and South Korea have all officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in Poland later this year.
The tournament concludes this Saturday in what many are calling the "Dream Final." It is a repeat of the 2024 showdown, featuring the two most successful nations in the competition's history.
Can Japan reclaim the throne, or will DPR Korea’s physical intensity guide them to back-to-back titles? All eyes turn to Pathum Thani this weekend.
