Nadeshiko Dominance to Clinch World Cup Berth

SYDNEY, Australia - In a display of pure footballing poetry, Japan’s "Nadeshiko" marched into the semifinals of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup today by dismantling the Philippines 7-0 at Stadium Australia. This victory does far more than just keep Japan’s title hopes alive as it officially secures their place at the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.

For the first 44 minutes of the match, the story was one of heroic resistance from the Filipinas. Young goalkeeper Nina Meollo acted as a titan between the sticks by making ten incredible saves to keep the world-ranked powerhouse at bay during a tense opening period. However, the relentless Japanese pressure finally told just seconds before the halftime whistle when a goalmouth scramble allowed Mina Tanaka to nod the ball home. This was followed immediately by a Tōko Koga header in stoppage time that transformed a scoreless deadlock into a comfortable two-goal cushion in a matter of moments.

The second half proved to be a masterclass in clinical finishing as Japan poured on the pressure against a tiring defense. Remina Chiba and Manaka Matsukubo scored in quick succession past the hour mark while Tōko Koga eventually secured her brace in the 76th minute. Late strikes from Momoko Tanikawa and Riko Ueki provided the final exclamation points on a dominant scoreline. Japan has now scored 24 goals in the tournament without conceding a single one and they look every bit like the favorites to take home the trophy.

With the quarter-finals now concluded, the "Big Four" of Asian football have officially punched their tickets to the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. By reaching the semi-finals, Australia, China PR, South Korea, and Japan have all secured the first automatic qualification spots for the global stage. The tournament now moves to a high-stakes semifinal round where Australia will face China in Perth on March 17 and Japan will take on South Korea in Sydney on March 18. While the Philippines suffered a tough loss today, their dream is not over as they move into the Play-in Tournament for a final chance to grab one of the remaining automatic spots for Brazil.
