Host Thailand Thrashes Timor-Leste, Vietnam Edges Laos in SEA Games Football Opener

BANGKOK, Thailand - The highly anticipated Men's Football tournament at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 2025) kicked off with a bang at the iconic Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. Fans were treated to a dramatic opening day, witnessing hosts Thailand assert their dominance and defending bronze medalists Vietnam secure a hard-fought victory.

The curtain-raiser saw a fiercely contested Group B clash between Vietnam U22 and Laos U22. It was a tight affair with Vietnam dominating possession, but Laos’ disciplined, low-block defense proved difficult to break down.

The deadlock was finally broken near the half-hour mark when Vietnam's Nguyễn Đình Bắc slotted home the opener. However, the joy was short-lived as Laos hit back almost immediately. Khampane Douangvilay found the net for Laos just moments later, ensuring the teams headed into the break level at 1-1 and setting the stage for a dramatic second half.

The decisive moment arrived on the hour mark, with Đình Bắc completing his brace. His second goal, scored after a skillful run past two defenders, initially faced controversy but was ultimately upheld by the match officials, securing the vital 2-1 victory and the first three points of the tournament for Vietnam.

Laos, while disappointed with the result, demonstrated resilience and tactical organization, suggesting they could pose a threat to other teams in the group.

The evening match saw the hosts, Thailand U22, launch their gold medal campaign in commanding fashion with a comprehensive 6-1 rout of Timor-Leste U22 in Group A. The War Elephants, aiming to reclaim the title on home soil after last winning in 2017, took time to settle in front of their home crowd.

The breakthrough came just before half-time, with striker Yotsakorn Burapha opening the scoring. The second half, however, saw the floodgates open as the Thais found their rhythm.

Yotsakorn was the star of the show, completing a brilliant hat-trick with two quick goals in the 70th and 72nd minutes. Other goals came from Siraphop Wandee, Iklas Sanron, and Kakana Khamyok, showcasing the host nation's attacking depth. Timor-Leste managed a late consolation goal through Palamito Caffin in injury time, but it did little to dampen the Thai celebrations.

The commanding victory immediately signals Thailand's intent to capture the gold medal, establishing an early lead in Group A's standings.
