JDT Snatch Dramatic 2-2 Draw in Phnom Penh to Retain Top Spot

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - Johor Darul Ta’zim FC scored twice in stoppage time to salvage a dramatic 2-2 draw with PKR Svay Rieng FC in Phnom Penh on Thursday, ensuring the Malaysia Super League champions retained top spot in Group B of the 2025/26 ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™.

Svay Rieng, making a bright start against the serial Malaysian title winners, had an early sight of goal as Sosidan's effort was comfortably saved by JDT goalkeeper Andoni Zubiaurre.

The hosts' pressure paid off just before the half-hour mark. Patrick forced Zubiaurre into action in the 28th minute with a shot from outside the area and, less than a minute later, the Brazilian was turning provider. Patrick rolled the ball into the path of his compatriot Cristian Roque on the left flank, who cut inside to unleash a right-foot shot from 25 yards out. The effort skipped off the turf and nestled in the bottom corner, beating Zubiaurre for the opener.

With eight minutes remaining in the half, Svay Rieng doubled their lead. Peprah burst down the left, finding space behind the JDT defence before rolling the ball across the face of goal for the unmarked Sosidan to slam into the roof of the net. Peprah almost added a third just before the break, with his shot flying narrowly wide of Zubiaurre’s post, signaling a dominant half for the hosts.

The second half saw Svay Rieng continue to threaten, with Patrick being denied by Zubiaurre 12 minutes from time and Bounphachan Bounkong seeing his late chip effort saved, misses the hosts were ultimately left to rue.

JDT launched a furious late assault, finding their breakthrough in the 92nd minute. Lowry was left unmarked to power in a header from Heberty’s corner, setting up a grandstand finish. Svay Rieng keeper Dara Vireak brilliantly kept out Jairo’s effort and blocked a goal-bound header from his own defender, Visal Soeuy, just moments before the equaliser.

Lowry was involved again in the 96th minute, heading across the face of goal for Corbin-Ong to nod in from close range, completing the remarkable comeback and securing a crucial point for the visitors.
