Philippines Downs Myanmar 2-0 in SEA Games Opener

CHIANG MAI, Thailand - The Philippine Men's National Football Team kicked off their SEA Games 2025 campaign with a decisive and promising 2-0 victory over Myanmar on Friday, December 5, at the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Chiang Mai. The result immediately places the young Azkals at the top of Group C as they chase a long-awaited breakthrough medal finish.

The Filipino side came out strong, displaying an aggressive, attacking intent that immediately tested the Myanmarese defense. Their pressure paid off just before the 20-minute mark.

The breakthrough came in the 19th minute, courtesy of a moment of brilliance from midfielder Alex Monis. Receiving a precise cross from the flank, Monis unleashed a powerful, well-placed strike that ripped past the opposing goalkeeper, giving the Philippines the crucial 1-0 lead and setting the tone for the match.

While Myanmar pushed for an equalizer to start the second half, the Philippines' tactical discipline and continued offensive threat kept them on the back foot. Just five minutes after the restart, the Azkals doubled their advantage.

The 50th minute saw a dangerous sequence inside the Myanmar penalty box that forced a desperate defensive effort. Under immense pressure, the ball was inadvertently turned into the net by a Myanmarese defender, officially recorded as an own goal by Latt Wai Phone putting the Philippines firmly in control with a 2-0 cushion.

With a two-goal lead, the Philippines maintained a solid structure, absorbing the inevitable late pressure from Myanmar. The Burmese side intensified their attacks in the latter stages, even rattling the woodwork with one of their best efforts, but the Filipino backline and goalkeeper held firm. They successfully defended their advantage until the final whistle, securing a valuable clean sheet and all three points.

The 2-0 triumph is a massive boost of confidence for the squad, which is aiming to overcome the country's past struggles in the men's SEA Games football tournament.

"This is a great start. Getting three points and a clean sheet in the first game is exactly what we needed to build momentum," said a member of the coaching staff. "The boys showed grit and great finishing. Now, the focus immediately shifts to the next challenge."

The Philippine Men's National Football Team will next face a crucial showdown against tournament powerhouse Indonesia on Monday, December 8, a match that will be pivotal in their quest to advance to the semifinals.
