Selangor FC Battles Fatigue, Eyes Crucial Three Points Against Lion City Sailors
PETALING JAYA, Malaysia – The atmosphere at the Selangor FC pre-match conference, while acknowledging the team's exit from the AFC Champions League Two, was sharply focused on the future and the critical need for player care. Head Coach Christophe Gamel delivered a candid assessment ahead of the clash with Lion City Sailors, stressing that securing a win is crucial, but not at the expense of his players' long-term health.
"While we are out of the qualification race, this match is vital for us to maintain and continue our development process," Coach Gamel explained. "However, I must be completely honest: my greatest concern is managing the extreme fatigue and avoiding injuries. We have a very demanding period ahead, and managing this game wisely is paramount to maintaining our continuity."
Gamel confirmed that fans should expect to see changes to the starting XI. He explained that his roster is currently "really reduced" due to a combination of existing player injuries and the necessary decision to release others for national team and U-23 duties.
"We fully support our national teams," he affirmed. "There is a hierarchy: first is the family, but immediately after, it is the nation."
The coach remains committed to developing his young squad, recognizing that they are still a team in development, prone to "immature moments". He views mistakes as an "essential part of the process" and continues to instill a high-pressing, "attacking-minded" philosophy into the team’s DNA.
Gamel expressed immense respect for the opponent, Lion City Sailors, who are still fighting for qualification. He described the Singaporean side as a "very good team" with exceptional "powerful speed" and "good maturity," noting their tactical efficiency in exploiting space across the final third.
Selangor FC player Mamadou Samassa reflected the team's determination to fight for victory. "We will not let them take our food in our hand," Samassa stated emphatically, underscoring the team's intent to defend their home ground fiercely.
In closing, Coach Gamel addressed the passionate Selangor faithful, acknowledging any frustration they may feel.
"We want to win every single time. But you must balance the reality with the dream," he pleaded. "Your support is the base of everything we do. We will be very happy to see our supporters return to the stadium and stand by this team".
