A New Era for ASEAN Football: The Path to the Elite

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - The landscape of Asian club football is shifting, and the ASEAN region is right in the heart of the transformation. Following the latest recommendations from the AFC Competitions Committee, the AFC Champions League Elite™ (ACL Elite) is preparing to expand to a 32-team format starting in the 2026/27 season. For fans in Southeast Asia, this isn't just a numbers game—it’s a massive open door.

Currently, the East Region; where ASEAN clubs battle it out is a tight 12-team race. By moving to 16 teams in the East (and 16 in the West), the AFC is creating four brand-new seats at the table.

For powerhouse leagues like those in Thailand and Malaysia, this provides much-needed breathing room. It ensures that the region's giants, such as Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Buriram United, have a more secure path to test themselves against the best of Japan, South Korea, and China.

The "strategic enhancements" don't stop at the size of the league. The AFC is introducing a Second Chance for teams that might have struggled early on.

  • Under the new proposal, teams finishing 7th to 10th in the league stage would enter a Knockout Stage Playoff.

  • This means an ASEAN club that might have traditionally been knocked out early now has a lifeline to fight for a spot in the Round of 16.

While Thailand and Malaysia currently lead the charge in the ACL Elite rankings, the expansion creates a "trickle-down" effect. As the top tier grows, it stabilizes the ACL Two, allowing clubs from Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore to compete in a highly competitive environment with a clearer roadmap for promotion to the Elite tier in future seasons.

The message from the AFC is clear: Inclusivity is the priority. The 2026/27 season is shaping up to be the most accessible and exciting chapter for Southeast Asian football. The dream of seeing an ASEAN club lift the most prestigious trophy in Asia just got a little more realistic.
