DPR Korea Blasts Past South Korea to Secure Spot in Asian Cup Final

PATHUM THANI, Thailand - In a high-stakes clash that lived up to its billing as the "Derby of the Peninsula," DPR Korea displayed a masterclass in clinical football, defeating South Korea 3–0 to secure their place in the 2026 AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup Final.

Under the humid evening sky at Pathum Thani Stadium, the reigning champions proved why they remain the gold standard of youth football in Asia. From the opening whistle, the "Chollima" girls played with a relentless high press that left their southern neighbors struggling for oxygen and possession.

The deadlock was broken in the 24th minute when Park Il-sim collected a loose ball 25 yards out. With a single touch to set herself, she unleashed a thunderous strike that skipped off the turf and past the outstretched arms of the South Korean keeper.

The momentum shifted entirely in DPR Korea's favor just ten minutes later. A sophisticated overlapping run by the wing-backs allowed Kang Yu-mi to find space in the box; she calmly slotted home a low cross in the 34th minute, doubling the lead and leaving South Korea stunned before the halftime whistle.

The second half saw a spirited attempt at a comeback from South Korea. However, the DPR Korea defensive line, led by captain Ri Myong-gum, was impenetrable. While South Korea searched for a spark, they were restricted to just two shots on target the entire match.

The final blow came in the 84th minute when substitute Choi Yeon-ah capitalized on a defensive lapse during a corner kick, poking the ball home to make it 3–0 and officially punching her team's ticket to the final.

While the defeat is a bitter pill for South Korea, there is a significant silver lining. By reaching the semi-finals, South Korea has officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland this September.

DPR Korea now moves forward to the Final, where they seek to defend their crown and cement their legacy as back-to-back champions. With a goal differential that has dominated the tournament so far, they enter the championship match as the heavy favorites.
